We’ve got a new trailer for the sci-fi film, Simulant (fka Hello Stranger), a movie with an impressive cast that explores the trope of whether sentient A.I. beings deserve to live (and love) like biological humans.

The movie—which stars Robbie Amell (Uploaded), Jordana Brewster (F9, Fast X), Alicia Sanz (El Cid), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), and Sam Worthington (Avatar: The Way of Water)—focuses on a simulated copy of a man who died in a car crash (Amell), whose widow (Brewster) is kinda creeped out by the robot replacement. The simulated replacement is sad his love is unanswered, and he apparently turns to an A.I. hacker (Liu, with a horrific hairstyle) to unlock his robot body’s potential. Doing so then sets the government after him in the form of an agent (Worthington), as the trailer teases there are some secrets about A.I. that they don’t want the general public to know.

Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:

A humanoid A.I.’s attempt to win over a widow’s heart places it in the path of a government agent trying to stop the rise of machine consciousness.

Simulant is directed by April Mullen and written by Ryan Christopher Churchill. You can check out the trailer above, but my initial take is that… this doesn’t look very good. I could be wrong though! If you want to decide for yourself, Simulant is premiering in Canadian theaters on April 7, 2023. In the U.S., it will be available on May 5, 2023 via DIRECTV On Demand and will have a broader day-and-date theatrical and home video release on June 2, 2023.
